Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses, Central African Republic, 2019

چکیده

Abstract Since May 2019, the Central African Republic has experienced a poliomyelitis outbreak caused by type 2 vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPV-2s). The affected Bangui, capital city, and 10 districts across country. resulted from several independent emergence events of VDPV-2s featuring recombinant genomes with complex mosaic genomes. low number mutations (<20) in viral capsid protein 1–encoding region compared vaccine strain suggests that VDPV-2 had been circulating for relatively short time (probably <3 years) before being isolated. Environmental surveillance, which relies on limited sampling sites does not cover whole country, failed to detect circulation some induced children.

Emergence of Vaccine-derived Polioviruses, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2004–2011

Polioviruses isolated from 70 acute flaccid paralysis patients from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during 2004-2011 were characterized and found to be vaccine-derived type 2 polioviruses (VDPV2s). Partial genomic sequencing of the isolates revealed nucleotide sequence divergence of up to 3.5% in the viral protein 1 capsid region of the viral genome relative to the Sabin vaccine strain. ...

bronchitis, wheezing bronchitis, and pneumonia. In the context of the previous reports of WUPyV detection in Australia and North America (3), our data suggest a worldwide distribution of WUPyV. Most of the WUPyV-positive children were <4 years of age, and WUPyV DNA was rarely found in children >6 years of age. This age distribution is compatible with WUPyV infection occurring in day nurseries a...

Gaps in our knowledge about transmission of vaccine-derived polioviruses.

It has long been known that oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) viruses are transmissible ¿to some degree¿ between vaccinated individuals and their contacts. This property has generally been considered an advantage of these vaccines, since it can spread immunity, despite the fact that the viruses sometimes revert to virulence and hence can also cause vaccine-attributable paralytic poliomyelitis in v...

Update on Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses — Worldwide, July 2012–December 2013

In 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis worldwide. One of the main tools used in polio eradication efforts has been live, attenuated oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), an inexpensive vaccine easily administered by trained volunteers. OPV might require several doses to induce immunity, but then it provides long-term protection against paralytic disease through durable ...
